We propose a cross-campus scientific research program in sustainability, giving UC Merced a leadership role within the UC system on addressing the defining challenges of the 21st century. Building on the successes of SNRI in using the Sierra Nevada-Central Valley region as a natural laboratory for research, we propose building research capacity and accompanying graduate enrollment in five related areas through strategic faculty hires across schools and graduate groups: i) water resources, ii) water quality, iii) air pollution, iv) renewable energy, v) communication and risk. These strategic directions, which are central in UC Merced's current Strategic Vision, will engage regional stakeholders and attract state, federal and private support. They will also expand the research excellence of UC Merced by building outward from existing strengths; and strengthen our ability to attract the best faculty, graduate students and undergraduates. We propose adding 12 faculty positions, and the resources needed for their success.
