Hunters Point Shipyard epidemiological study

OPG Proposal Status:

Hunters Point Shipyard has a legacy of ground contamination by particulate radiation. While the politicians are arguing who is responsible for the cleanup, wether the previous cleanup was done correctly or not, and what should be done about it, epidemiologists have a role to play to provide the local community and the larger Bay Area community with solid data to develop evidence-based solutions. UCSF and UC Berkeley are already working together to analyze the quality of procedures which were used to test for radiation contamination.

Preventing Inpatient Endoscopy Delays through a Multidisciplinary Team Approach

OPG Proposal Status:

Abstract:

More than 1000 inpatient endoscopic procedures are performed each year at UCSF Medical Center. Inpatient endoscopic procedures require complex coordination of care between gastroenterology, endoscopy nursing, inpatient nursing, anesthesia, and the primary team. As a result of unpredictable volume of procedures and complex care coordination, procedure delays are frequent, leading to increased length of stay, increased hospital costs, and frustration among patients and providers.

Tracheostomy Education Initiative

OPG Proposal Status:

Pediatric and neonatal tracheostomy refers to a surgical airway in the neck, commonly performed to bypass upper airway obstruction and to support patients with long-term requirements for mechanical ventilation. Pre-operative tracheostomy education, peri-operative tracheostomy care, and long-term tracheostomy care is essential for a smooth and safe transition to life at home with a tracheostomy-dependent patient.

Implementing point of care urine drug screening to improve care and timely disposition of ED patients with substance use disorders

OPG Proposal Status:
  • ABSTRACT

Mental health and substance use disorders (SUD) are common and emergency department (ED) visits for psychiatric disease and SUD are increasing throughout the nation. Several studies have found that SUDs frequently contribute to high levels of ED utilization. UCSF is no exception. Over 3000 urine drug screens were ordered last year in the UCSF ED: 63% were positive for at least one substance.

Improving clinic efficiency and patient wait time through paperless data collection and integration

OPG Proposal Status:

PROBLEM: Wait time on the day of a clinic appointment is a measure of patient satisfaction, as well as an index of operational efficiency in all UC Health clinical operations. At Mt. Zion mammography clinic, for 8,000 appointments per year, we print and then scan the digital intake form back into the system for each visit. For our staff, it takes up to 5 hours a week to scan the paper forms into Epic. For the patients, completing the intake form on paper adds up to 30 minutes to the wait time.
