Supporting staff/NFA professional growth and development

OPG Proposal Status:

The staff and non-faculty academics (NFAs) in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics are ROCK STARS! While our staff/NFAs are a critical part of promoting and sustaining the key missions in the DEB, they are frequently the unsung heroes. Supporting their professional growth and development is a priority. I would like to consider creating a pool of funds that are set aside for our staff/NFAs to cover expenses associated with professional development activities, such as attending classes or workshops.

K writing group for postdocs / junior faculty / other interested parties

OPG Proposal Status:

A subset of postdocs have started an informal K01 writing group.  Each week, we draft a different section of the application, which we circulate via dropbox or circulate hard copies if we’re meeting in person. We meet for 1.5 hours each week to provide feedback to other people on their sections (i.e. we’ll have 10 minutes to read, 20 minutes to discuss someone’s significance section). We loosely follow the schedule for the Grant Proposal Writing Bootcamp at Stanford, which I’ve adapted slightly below.

UME Teaching Scholars Program

OPG Proposal Status:

One of the core roles of our Department is to provide training in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Population Science (EBPS) to medical students during their training in Foundational Sciences (first 18 months of the medical school Bridges Curriculum). The undergraduate medical education (UME) curriculum is undergoing a big change and we are looking for new teaching stars to train future physicians.

Department Swag

OPG Proposal Status:

To help increase the sense of cohesion and belonging, I propose we provide to faculty and staff Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics swag. For example, fleece sweaters with our Department name and the UCSF logo. If we had a catchy tagline for the Dept that could be included too. When ordered in bulk these can be reasonably priced.
