Creating Cost Effective Surgeons: Development of an Interactive Learning Module to Teach Surgeons Economical Surgical Supply Selection.

OPG Proposal Status:

Work through Caring Wisely has identified surgical supplies as a target area for streamlining superfluous costs at our Medical Center.   While surgical resident educators expertly teach young surgeons technical skills required in the operating room, very little attention is paid to educating residents regarding the cost associated with the surgical supplies required for these operations.  Furthermore, even the educators themselves, have little to no formal training in the costs of supplies used in surgery.  We seek to create cost effective surgeons by enhancing decision-making in selecting economical surgical supplies via an interactive learning module.

UCSF Guideline for evaluation and treatment of term and late preterm newborns at risk for sepsis

OPG Proposal Status:

Background and significance of target area:

"Rule Out Sepsis" is a term used for presumptive treatment of newborns with signs or risk factors suggesting bacterial infection.  It is one of the most common reasons for term and late preterm newborns to be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  At UCSF we generally treat these infants with intravenous (IV) antibiotics until cultures have been negative for at least 48 hours.

Medical Students as High-Value Care Officers

OPG Proposal Status:
