The healthcare industry has seen a boom in the digitalization of clinical care through the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Despite the expected benefits of the EHR, effect on health care outcomes have not been robust. In order to take advantage of what technology can offer medicine there is a need for physicians to engage in the fields data science and clinical informatics to help merge the digital world with the clinical in a meaningful way.

Adverse events and unanticipated outcomes take an emotional toll on health care providers. Although much has been published about the “second victim effect” on attending physicians, including the effectiveness of emotional support in mitigating the adverse consequences of the second victim phenomenon, less is known about how to best support trainees experiencing emotional distress related to patient care.

The proposed project is pilot a Mental Health First Aid training to certify pharmacy students in Mental Health First Aid. If successful, this pilot can be disseminated to other schools and campus and health system-wide to certify UCSF health professional students, faculty, and staff in Mental Health First Aid.
