Improving Patient Knowledge and Informed Decision Making about Periviable Deliveries

OPG Proposal Status:

1. Background and significance of target area:

The periviable period is a period of time in gestation when the fetal outcome of long term neonatal survival is quite tenuous. For example, survival rates are generally 6% at 22 weeks, 26% at 23 weeks, and 55% at 24 weeks, and 72% at 25 weeks. Because the outcomes vary so widely, the decision to resuscitate an infant born between 23+0 to 24+6 remains based on local practice and patient/family preference.
